Professor Helma Wennemers has been teaching at D-CHAB for twelve years with unwavering enthusiasm – be it specialized lectures or introductory lectures in organic chemistry. For her performance, the ETH Zurich Student Association (VSETH) has honored her with the Golden Owl 2023. In this interview, she speaks about her experiences and role models and reveals the value of traditional teaching methods.

You've just come back from the lecture. How was it today?

It was great! My students and I had a lot of fun together.

Can you remember your very first lecture? How did you experience it?

Of course! That was in Basel, and the lecture was on "Chemical Evolution." I was an assistant professor at the time, without any doctoral students of my own. But there were doctoral students from other groups in the lecture hall who raised a banner at the back of the room saying: Go Helma, go! That freaked me out at first,

    Let the kemikalie games begin!

    Who we are

    Linus Boll (chair)

Linus is a PhD student in the group of Prof. Helma Wennemers and a member of the Behringer Simon Lecture committee since December 2023. Having grown up in Berlin, Linus moved to Zurich to complete his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry at ETH Zurich and the National University of Singapore, where he worked with Prof. Ang Wee Han within the field of bioinorganic chemisty. Back in Zurich, Linus pursued a Master’s degree in chemistry contributing to research projects within the groups of Prof. Helma Wennemers and Prof. Jeffrey Bode, which solidified his desire to do research at the intersection of organic chemistry and biology. For his Master’s thesis, Linus joined the group of Prof. Ronald T. Raines at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked on the context-dependence of cysteine and lysine reactivity and refined a method for site-selective cysteine phosphorylation. Having joined the Wennemers group in September 2022, Linus’ resea
