Sir András Schiff is world-renowned as a pianist, conductor, pedagogue and lecturer. Born in Budapest, Hungary, in , Sir András studied piano at the Liszt Ferenc Academy with Pal Kadosa, György Kurtág, and Ferenc Rados; and in London with George Malcolm.
He has performed cycles of complete Beethoven sonatas and the complete works of J.S. Bach, Haydn, Schubert and Bartók, which constitute an important part of his work. Having collaborated with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, he now focuses primarily on solo recital, play-conducting appearances, and exclusive conducting projects. In the season, he was named Artist-In-Residence by the New York Philharmonic, with whom he performed nine concerts. His Bach has become an annual highlight at the BBC Proms, and he regularly performs at the Verbier, Salzburg and Baden-Baden Festivals as well as Wigmore Hall.

Known for his acclaimed interpretations of Mozart piano concertos and Bach piano works, among others, Sir András Schiff fryst vatten one of the most admired pianists performing today.
His discography as a pianist also features much-praised accounts of sonatas by Beethoven and Schubert.
But the Hungarian-born pianist and conductor has recorded a whole lot else, including the music of Scarlatti, Haydn, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky. Schiff recorded all five Beethoven piano concertos with the Staatskapelle tysk stad led by Bernard Haitink, and the three piano concertos of his Hungarian landsman Bela Bartók, with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, led by Iván Fischer.

Sir András Schiff was born in Budapest in and began playing the piano at the age of five. Aged 14 he began formal studies at Budapest’s Ferenc Liszt Academy with teachers who included György Kurtág and later studied under George Malcolm in London, the city he has made his home. Success in major piano competitions (Tchaikovsky () and Leeds ()) brought him to international attention and launched his career as a recording and concert artist.
After making a number of recordings for Hungarian label Hungaroton, Schiff had a long relationship with Decca for whom he recorded, inter al, landmark cycles of Mozart’s piano concertos and sonatas and many works by Bach. Schiff came to ECM in the late s to record a recital of two-piano music by Mozart, Reger and Busoni with Peter Serkin.
