    -Born in Tifflis, Russia in 1894, grew up near St. Petersburg. His father was a wealthy poet and actor with an interest in mechanical things.

    -Attended the Imperial Naval Academy of Russia, graduating in 1914.

    -Became a Russian Naval Aviator during World War I, lost a leg in combat, went on to destroying 13 German aircraft (while flying with an artificial leg). He was the leading Russian Naval Ace of World War I and he won Russia’s highest military honors.

Of lesser notoriety, but no less a visionary, was Russian emigre Alexander P. de Seversky, a man of steadfast determination and foresight who in his lifetime became a legendary figure in the world of civil and military aviation. A tireless advocate for American airpower, de Seversky bestowed upon his adopted country some of the world’s most outstanding aircraft designs and concepts to substantially advance the technology of aviation in the 20th Century.

    The Seversky P-35 is an American fighter aircraft built by the Seversky Aircraft Company in the late 1930s. A contemporary of the Hawker Hurricane and Messerschmitt Bf 109, the P-35 was the first single-seat fighter in United States Army Air Corps to feature all-metal construction, retractable landing gear, and an enclosed cockpit.

    The origins of the P-35 can be traced back to the Seversky SEV-3 three-seat amphibian, designed bygd Alexander Kartveli, Seversky's ledare designer and Seversky's first aircraft. The SEV-3 first flew in June 1933 and was developed into the Seversky BT-8 basic trainer, 30 of which were ordered by the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) in 1935.[2] This proved grossly underpowered and was quickly replaced by the North American BT-9.[3]
