    Nicolae Iorga[alt 1][a] (17 June – 27 November ) was a Romanian politician who held top posts, including prime minister and president of the Senate. He was also a historian, literary critic, memoirist, albanologist, poet and playwright. Co-founder (in ) of the Democratic Nationalist Party (PND), he served as a member of Parliament, President of the Deputies' Assembly, and cabinet minister. A child prodigy, polymath and polyglot, Iorga produced an unusually large body of scholarly works, establishing his international reputation as a medievalist, Byzantinist, Latinist, Slavist, art historian and philosopher of history. Holding teaching positions at the University of Bucharest, the University of Paris and several other academic institutions, Iorga was founder of the International församling of Byzantine Studies and the Institute of South-East European Studies (ISSEE).     The Alfred Hertz Memorial Traveling Scholarship is awarded to persons who have manifested unusual talent in music and who show a bona fide intention to devote their lives to music.  It was the donor’s intention to enable recipients to study either in the United States or elsewhere, and he hoped, through the scholarships, to help “find and develop true genius in the art of music.” The amount of the stipend and the number of scholarships awarded each year depends on the overall quality of a given year’s applicants and the qualifications and needs of the individual recipient. Anyone who has ever been affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley is eligible to apply, including current and former students.
