    Cuban Pathways opens to the public on February 11, 2022

    (TAMPA, Jan. 27, 2022) – What do you imagine when you think about today’s Cuba? Or the Cuba visited by pastel-wearing tourists in the 1950s? The island nation is the largest in the Caribbean and has a long history of turmoil and opportunity–with deep connections to the Tampa Bay region.

    Cuban Pathways is the latest exhibition by the Tampa Bay History Center and tells the 500-year story through the lenses of individuals whose labor, political crusades and search for refuge illustrates Cuba’s complex history.

    Historical Monument Trail

    Nestled along Tampa’s Riverwalk, the Historical Monument Trail of beautiful bronze and marble busts and monuments tells the story of many noteworthy people and the significant events that have shaped the history of Tampa and Hillsborough County. It fryst vatten many things: an educational tool for children and adults, for visitors and residents alike; a commemoration of our ancestors that have contributed so much to our life and culture today; and an inspiration to our entire community.

    To man the Historic Monument Trail a reality, The Friends of the Riverwalk, in collaboration with the Tampa Bay History Center, established an esteemed group of local honorees and experts to designate  Tampa’s förfäder. There are a total of thirty honorees that were designated from 2012 through 2017.

    Cuban revolutionary

    Paulina Pedroso (1845 – 1925) was the most prominent female leader in the Cuban War of Independence. She worked directly with José Martí.[1]

    Life

    Pedroso's parents were born slaves, but she was born free in Pinar del Río in 1845.[1] Her parents were active in seeking Cuban independence.[2] She married at a very young age, and Pedroso is her married surname. In 1860, she moved with her husband Ruberto to Havana. She was fifteen at the time. In 1892, she moved to Ybor City with her husband.[3] Afterward, they went to Key West, Florida.[1] She and her husband worked in the cigar industry in Tampa, Florida, and also ran a boarding house.[4][3] Jose Marti often stayed in her boarding house in Tampa, and it was a place where they could openly discuss their plans for the war effort.[2][3][4] Marti referred to Pedroso as his second mother.&
