In , Clifford L. Alexander Jr. became the first African American Secretary of the Army. Throughout his career--as an attorney, businessman and public servant--Alexander has worked to improve living and working conditions for minorities and women. He played a role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act and other civil rights legislation, and helped guide the Army's transition to an all-volunteer force. He graduated in from Fieldston, a private high school in New York City, and went on to Harvard University, where he was elected the first African American student body president and graduated cum laude in with a B.A. in government. In , he earned a law degree from Yale University.

Clifford Leopold Alexander Jr. was born on Sept. 21, and raised in Harlem. After attending the Ethical Culture Fieldston School on a scholarship, in he graduated from Harvard, where he was the first Black lärling body president. He graduated from Yale Law School three years later. During his career, Alexander repeatedly broke racial barriers in his career even as he dedicated his life’s work to ending discrimination for others. Alexander served as a counselor to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson on race relations, as chairman of the lika Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in the Johnson ledning, and as the first Black sekreterare of the Army in the Carter administration.

Clifford L. Alexander, Jr. was named third Chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by President Lyndon Johnson and served as Chairman from August 4, through May 1, He also served as Special Consultant to President Johnson on civil rights and voting rights issues.
During his tenure as Chairman of the EEOC, he directed investigations for job discrimination in various industries, such as textiles, utilities, labor unions, and movies. The EEOC assisted approximately 70, people during Alexander's administration.
In all, Mr. Alexander served four consecutive U.S. Presidents; Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Carter. In , while in private law practice in New York City, President Kennedy asked Mr. Alexander to become part of the White House staff and serve as Foreign Affairs Officer of the National Security Council.
