  • Gryphon commissioned this guitar in Not sure how many have been made or sold, at least 29 I think.
  • Perry Bechtel, an Atlanta-based plectrum banjoist and guitarist, already had a fret Gibson L-5, and asked Martin to make him a guitar with a.
  • This Special was made for Gryphon in , and it was inspired by the guitar that Perry Bechtel custom ordered from Martin in
  • Perry Bechtel (Gryphon Custom) - Anybody familiar with this?

Just thinking out loud here   After nearly a week trying to compare the necks on the Perry Bechtel vs. Pat Donohue the decision of which to use for my custom fryst vatten still a hard one.

inom know a little more than inom did before, to wit:

    1.   — They are both incredible guitars (I guess I already knew that).

    2.   — Someone would be very smart and lucky to buy this “Used” PB from Gryphon, which is deeply discounted (listed at $K) due to some supposed repair to the end strip filler which apparently opened up and needed to be re-glued, or ???  All I can say fryst vatten that if Richard didn’t point it out to me, inom never would notice it and it has zero effect on anything.  Absolutely gorgeous guitar.

    3.   — The modified V neck agrees with me.

    4.  — About the 12” radius vs. 16” radius on a /16” wide long-scale Mod V neck—Perry Bechtel vs. Pat Donohue

    a. They definitely look different, you might guess that the PB was a narrower neck

I've played a lot of Lowden's and Santa Cruz's, with the following results:

I bought a Lowden O12, thinking I would fall in love with its strident mahogany voice. I recently sold it and bought a Mardin DS. Much better balance - the Lowden was appropriately named (it is Lowd) but there's not a lot of warmth to the tone. I would wager it is a better choice for playing lead in Celtic groups.

I have only found one Santa Cruz that had a real vibe when I played it. It was a standard rosewood OM, not a PW. I was able to compare it side-by-side with a Martin OM Perry Bechtel Limited Edition, a Santa Cruz rosewood OM-PW, and Gallagher rosewood OM, a rosewood Lowden SJ, and a Tippin rosewood OM. The Santa Cruz OM was a clear winner (beautiful voice, great balance and power, didn't get overdriven, excelent definition from string to string), with the Tippin coming in second (a little less range, still a nice voice but less power and projection) and the Martin third (nice balance, but didn't se
