    Nigeria university student Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola has been crowned the winner of Muslimah World 2013, an all-Muslim beauty pageant.

    The 21-year-old, who is a native of the Yoruba tribe, beat 19 other hopefuls, after wowing the judges with her knowledge on the Koran and her refreshing philosophy on Islam in the modern world.

    When her name was announced as the winner at the Jakarta pageant, she dropped to her knees and thanked "almighty Allah" before reciting a Koranic verse. Her prizes included 25 million rupiah (£1,375) and trips to Mecca and India.

    "The event was not really about competition," she told AFP. "We're just trying to show the world that Islam is beautiful."

    Organisers said that the pageant challenged the idea of beauty and strengthened self-development in Muslim women.

    All contestants were required to wear a headscarf (hijab).

    An all-Muslim beauty pageant, World Muslimah 2013, has crowned its winner in Indonesia even as the Muslim hardliners of the country continue to protest against the Miss World 2013 pageant.

    Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola of Nigeria was crowned Miss World Muslimah 2013 on 18 September at the third edition of the pageant held in Jakarta. Ajibola has won a prize money of $2200 (£ 1365) and trips to Mecca and India in reward.

    Established by the World Muslimah Foundation (WMF) in 2011, the World Muslimah beauty pageant is exclusively for Muslim women and is aimed at strengthening self-development in Muslim women.

    The unique beauty pageant saw contestants wearing headscarves (hijab) while they cat walked clad head to foot in colourful burqa-styled gowns.

    It is rather an annual event organised by World Muslimah Foundation, WM Foundation, a non-governmental Muslim organisation that provides a conceptual model and specific techniques to guide sisterhood among Muslims so that they could become models in the world through piety, obedience to Allah’s injunctions and every necessary activity that will enhance understanding of Islam and encourage members to be confident to find their essential skills.
