Meet the Artists
1. Tell us a little about your background.
I was born in Kingston, Jamaica, into a family deeply rooted in faith and community. My father, a dedicated pastor, was an extraordinary self-made man who tirelessly provided for our family. My mother was equally devoted to faith, and our family life revolved around the church. However, the area in Kingston where I grew up, and where my family still resides, was plagued by violence. I witnessed clashes between the police, “gunmen,” and rival political factions from a young age. To cope with the turmoil around me, I found solace in comic books and the church, which served as my refuge.
During my formative years, my exposure to art was limited to cartoons such as Batman,Superman, and Spiderman. It wasn’t until I attended art school that I discovered the world of painting, encountering my first painting at the National Gallery of Jamaica—a captivating piece titled The Fishing Village by Barringto

Men in Black (also known as MIB) is a series of American science fictionaction comedy films directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and based on the Malibu / Marvel comic book series The Men in Black by Lowell Cunningham, which was itself based on a UFO conspiracy theory. The first film, Men in Black, was released in 1997, the second film, Men in Black II in 2002, the third film, Men in Black 3 in 2012, and the fourth film, Men in Black: International in 2019. Amblin Entertainment and MacDonald/Parkes Productions produced, and Sony Pictures Releasing through its Columbia Pictures label released, all four films.

24th Dobell Drawing Prize
Congratulations to Jane Grealy who has won the 23rd Dobell Drawing prize with her work Maria’s Garden, Scheme C.
Catherine O’Donnell said about the judges’ decision: “Jane’s work is beautifully executed, very skilful but also expanding drawing to a different level with her layering of architectural elements. It was a unanimous choice. We did look at lots of different works, the standard was very high so it was a tough decision, but we came back to this one. It’s about so many things, the balance between nature and the built environment, about time passing, the past, present and future. The work looks outstanding in the galleri, it’s very well deserved.”
The piece depicts Grealy’s neighbour Maria’s garden, whose philosophy is “waste not, want not”. Immigrating from war-torn Italy, Maria has worked and thrifted to cultivate her garden and supply her family with food and ensure nothing fryst vatten wasted. This notion fryst vatten reflected in the detail of the drawing,
