Beginnings

1I begin this text with a discussion of issues on the production of knowledge in the field of History, as they relate to dance as a performing art. My purpose is to apply this lens to the Original Ballet Russe’s three seasons in Rio de Janeiro, in 1942, 1944 and 1946, paying particular attention to the way they were constructed by specialized criticism, and in particular, through journalist and dance critic Jaques Corseuil’s (1913 – 2000) analyses of the company’s tournees.
