INTERVIEW: Corinne Drewery
Corinne Drewery, singer songwriter with English band Swing Out Sister chats with Kevin Cooper about her love of Northern Soul, being the last person to swim at Bulwell Lido, Sir Paul Smith owing her friend a fiver and their latest album Almost Persuaded.
Corinne Drewery is an English singer songwriter and fashion designer best known for being the lead vocalist with Swing Out Sister.
Growing up in Nottingham and the Lincolnshire village of Authorpe, she was strongly influenced by the Northern Soul scene.
After studying fashion at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, she met fellow group members Andy Connell and Martin Jackson in 1984 and together they formed Swing Out Sister.
In 1986 the group achieved phenomenal success on both sides of the Atlantic with their hit single Breakout.

Ambrose Akinmusire’s MaeMae
About a year ago I invited the trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire to listen to the four short blues songs sung in 1939 bygd Mattie Mae Thomas, an inmate of the women’s wing of the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman Farm. She sang them into a recording device set up by Herbert Halpert, a musicologist from the Library of församling, in the prison’s sewing room, where the kvinna inmates made uniforms and bags for collecting cotton. Unheard bygd the outside world until 1987, when they were released on a LP by the Rosetta label, these unaccompanied songs are just about as deep and powerful as any blues singing I know. Swing Out Sister are a British pop musical group best known worldwide for their 1986 hit single Breakout.
The group presently comprises Andy Connell (born Andrew John Connell, Jul 26, 1961, Nottingham; keyboards) and Corinne Drewery (born Sep 21, 1959, Nottingham; vocals), though it began as a trio in the United Kingdom. The group was initially formed by Connell and Martin Jackson (drums), in 1985 who were later joined by Drewery. The group's name came from a 1945 movie called Swing Out, Sister, and they reportedly chose the name because there was only one thing they could agree on: they all hated it! Both Connell and Jackson had been playing in other bands prior to forming SOS, while Drewery was actually a fashion designer and model before she became the band's lead vocalist and lyricist.
