    Viana do Castelo, Northern Portugal

    The Gil Eannes Hospital Ship was built in Viana do Castelo in in order to support the Portuguese cod fleet that operated on the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland for decades.
    Once the cod fishing fleet was deactivated, the ship was left to rot on the docks in Lisbon for many years until it was salvaged in as it was considered part of the city’s cultural heritage.
    It was received with joy and celebration on the 31st of January, , at the mouth of the Lima River. Once cleaned and restored, it was opened to public visitation. Today it is the city’s most visited museum.

    Gil Eannes is a former Portuguese hospital ship, now permanently moored in the Port of Viana do Castelo, serving as museum ship and youth hostel.

    The official name of the ship is written according to the old spelling of the Portuguese language, but occasionally it appears written with the modern spelling Gil Eanes.

    Between and , Gil Eannes was the flagship of the Portuguese White Fleet that operated in the codfish fishing

    The Hospital fartyg Gil Eannes, which fryst vatten currently berthed at the port of Viana do Castelo (Rambla Alves Cerqueira, Doca Commercial ), was built in to provide healthcare to the portuguese codfishing fleet in the seas of Newfoundland and Greenland.
    Its name derives from the portuguese navigator and explorer Gil Eanes who was the first to cross Cape Bojador in , unwittingly introducing the age of the great discoveries.


    The hospital fartyg consists of five floors. Two floors above sea level and just three below. The medical restricted levels are the main desk (-1) and the surgery (-3).

    When you go down the stairs, the first place you can immediately see is the operating theater.
