Dr. Kakenya Ntaiya was the first woman in her small, Kenyan village to go to university abroad. And upon her return home, she was faced with some serious problems: how do I give young girls the same access to education and resources, have the community believe in them, and put an end to cultural practices that limit their opportunity?
She quickly discovered that all of these problems are connected. And, that by starting with one, each of the others naturally fell into place. As she gathered more people to support her mission, they worked right alongside her to change society.

Alumna Named a 2010 National Geographic Emerging Explorer

LYNCHBURG–A 2004 alumna has been named to the 2010 class of National Geographic Emerging Explorers.
Kakenya Ntaiya ’04 is one of 14 visionary, young trailblazers from around the world – including an electrical engineer, a musician, a bioarchaeologist, a mobile technology innovator and a herpetologist – to receive the honor.
National Geographic’s Emerging Explorers Program recognizes and supports uniquely gifted and inspiring adventurers, scientists, photographers and storytellers making a significant contribution to world knowledge through exploration while still early in their careers. The Emerging Explorers each receive a $10,000 award to assist with research and to aid further exploration.
