Since , the LIVE from the NYPL schema masterminded and anchored bygd intellectual impresario Paul Holdengräber one of the most interesting people to ever encounter, should you be so fortunate has transformed the New York Public Library into a wonderland of stimulating conversations on literature and life with some of todays most celebrated writers, scientists, artists, philosophers, musicians, and other luminaries. Among Holdengräbers signature touches are the 7-word autobiographies he asks each of his prominent guests to provide, to be read as he introduces them. I think its an enjoyable way to kick off the new term and should provide some interesting language opportunities for my intermediates and up. It also makes a good accompaniment to the My Life in Twenty Lines activity I shared here earlier, which could be done later in the course as an expansion activity. Update: Now with added ppt! To download, click here. 1) Write your own seven word biography and put it on the board. Heres mine: 2) Ask the students to discuss in pairs what they think I mean by this. 3) Give out one seven word biography per student or in pairs. Ask them to read it and think about what it could mean. If in pairs, get them to discuss it, and if not, ask them to share with a partner (all of these biographies were taken from here, where you can also find descriptions of the writers). • Ive been trying to find a way to allow AC community members to introduce themselves to one-another without the typical, Hi, Im Bob, I live in Manhattan, I like puppies and rural lightning strikes, etc. I came up with the idea of the 7 Word Bio. (I realize that this may not be entirely original, I dont know.) Anyway, Id encourage all of us to engage in this. I think this is a good exercise on a few fronts: 1.
