When he stepped down in January as the fourth United States director of national intelligence, James Clapper had been President Obama's senior intelligence adviser for six and a half years, longer than his three predecessors combined. Susan and James Clapper both come from Army families, and both their fathers eventually worked for the NSA. When James was an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, his mother set him up with Susan, who was still in high school. "I finally called her up to get my mother to stop pestering me," he says. All four parents are now buried in Section 64 of Arlington National Cemetery.
On a cool day in September, James Clapper agreed to let me come along with him to see their graves. I picked him up at home; he was standing ready outside his garage in a polo shirt, cargo pants, Sperry Top-Siders, and sunglasses. In the car ride over, Google Maps fed him directions through a Bluetooth app connected to one of his hearing aids.
