    Rhett was born in Macon, Georgia to Jim and Diane McLaughlin. In , his family moved to Buies Creek, North Carolina, where he and Link met for the first time.

    The two were in first grade, and stayed inre during recess for writing profanity on their desks. Their teacher, Ms. Locklear, gave them picture of Mythical Beasts to color while inre. The moniker would later be used to describe their fans on YouTube.
