Malerie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A few years ago, I walked into a corporate office in sweatpants and a fanny pack–my version of clenching on to what was left of my inner creative as I’d taken on a 9 to 5 soul-sucking desk job. Next to me sat James Mackenzie with his stupidly cool beard and easy demeanor. I liked him immediately. We quickly found out that we had a lot in common and bonded over our distaste of the job that we often fantasized about getting fired from. We worked in cubicles, felt like frauds, and craved something more. So, we did what anyone would do: we started making short films on the weekends.
One day, while mindlessly surfing the internet at my desk, I got a chat from James (who can resist IM-ing with someone two feet away?!). It was a link for a GLAAD / Project Greenlight Digital Challenge. I responded immediately: “I’m down!” We used the footage and concept
